Shakespeare and Some of his Characters

Description

Mid 20th-century mural painting in oil on three hardboard panels showing Shakespeare and some of his characters; by Arthur Keene, 1974. Shakespeare's face is derived partly from the Droeshout engraving and Holy Trinity Church monument bust and partly a self-portrait of the artist. Female figure at Shakespeare's feet is modelled on the artist's second wife Karen Keene. The characters are Romeo and Juliet in an outdoor setting to the left, a 'merry wife', Shylock, Feste from Twelfth Night, Lady Macbeth sleepwalking and Falstaff. Commissioned by the Barclay's Bank Trust Company Limited, Stratford-upon-Avon in 1974.
