Spinning wheel

Description

Spinning wheel, c. 1666 - 1799. Spinning wheel - the bed an adzed oak plank with four stake legs; the spindle board a narrower plank set into and through the end of bed and pegged below; a wooden rod is set into the board and bed supporting its angle; the top is pierced with four holes to take spindle bearings and carved away to accomodate the whorl; the board top is curved, and it and the bed ends have thumbnail gouging; the wheel post of curved natural shape is set through the bed and pegged below; the axle and wheel hub are of turned and pegged oak; the spokes and rim are of ash; the bentwood two-piece rim is nailed to the ten turned spokes. Welsh. Late 17th-18th century. Worn and wormed in places. Spindle-board tongue is replaced.
