Square-headed brooch

Description

One of a pair of Anglo-Saxon square-headed brooches, ornamented with incised lines; 6.2 cm long; 6th-century AD. The brooch has decoration of small circles around the outer edges of the headplate and footplate and concentric circles at the bottom., This brooch is one of an identical pair found in the grave of a woman. One brooch was pinned to her shoulder and the other was below her chin. The woman was also buried with a pottery bowl and cup, a bronze ornament, a bronze ring brooch, a knife and two bronze ferrules, a pair of bronze clasps and the remains of a finger ring.
