Hamlet and Gertrude

Description

A painting by Carel Victor Morlais Weight depicting Hamlet and his mother, illustrating the incident (Act III Scene 4) when Hamlet confronts his mother, Queen Gertrude, over her relationship with Claudius. During this scene, Hamlet implores 'Save me and hover o'er me with your wings,/You heavenly guards! (To the Ghost) What would you, gracious figure?'

Oil on board; framed.

Weight was an official war artist, 1945-46. His painting of 'Hamlet' (1965) is in the Harris Museum and Art Gallery and other examples of his work are in the collections of the Tate Gallery, Fitzwilliam Museum, Imperial War Museum, and a number of other galleries.
