Palmer's Farm

Description

A woodcut engraving of the building formerly known as Mary Arden's House, Wilmcote, by the artist Charles Edwin Flower (1871?-1951). Lettered at bottom left corner with artist's monogram and signed in pencil by the artist in the bottom right corner. Unframed, in a card mount.

The house was first identified as the childhood home of William Shakespeare's mother, Mary Arden, in 1798. Since 2000, however, it has been known as Palmer's Farm, following new research. This print depicts the house as it has looked since the rendering which previously obscured the timber-framing was removed some time after 1930. The red-brick cottage to the south-west (previously called Glebe Farm) is where Mary Arden is believed to have lived.
