The Stratford Grammar School Desk

Description

A medieval/tudor oak and elm standing desk from King Edward Sixth Grammar School, of the type used by a schoolmaster. A standing desk with massive single-plank slope top now set with a small rectangular lifting lid with wrought iron butterfly hinges, giving access to a compartment fronted by thin nailed elm planks with later lock-plate, backed by three elm and two pine boards, and with heavy internal lower shelf; the whole raised on massive side supports, roughly cat at the top and terminating in elm sledge feet; English, 15th or 16th century; later cut, with patches and additions.
