A co-production between the Royal Shakespeare Company and the amateur company, the Belvoir Players. Regional primary schools were also used: St. Malachy's College. Performances started at the Royal Shakespeare Theatre in Stratford-upon-Avon. The production then toured round the country with local amateur dramatic groups playing the roles of the mechanicals and local primary school children playing the fairies. These groups all came to perform in Stratford for different dates when the production returned in the summer.
