This online exhibition, curated by Dr Cathryn Enis, investigates the long partnership between the celebrated designer, Tibor Reich (1916-1996), and the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust. It considers the textiles commissioned for the Shakespeare Centre as a significant moment for modernist interior design in Great Britain and introduces newly digitised images of the S400 textile collection designed for the 1964 Shakespeare quatercentenary. It also explores the cultural context of Reich's responses to Shakespeare and Stratford-upon-Avon, suggesting that the designer's work is a central element of William Shakespeare's twentieth-century material heritage.
