Shakespeare Connected - Ageless Cleopatra

“My tires and mantles”

Costumes for the Royal Shakespeare Company’s Antony and Cleopatra (1972) were designed by Ann Curtis. Cleopatra has a range of clothing emphasising both her public and private roles in the play.

Some have an ancient Egyptian feel, some are extravagant, and others are simply regular eveningwear.

Cleopatra was serious about fashion; she introduced new trends including combinations of Greek and Egyptian attire, as well as mixing highly simple and highly elaborate designs.
