Shakespeare Connected - Costuming Shakespeare: Elizabethan Dress through the Centuries

William Poel's production of Measure for Measure, 1893

Around the turn of the 20th century, William Poel adopted a reconstructive approach to staging Shakespeare with his Elizabethan Stage Society (1894–1905). The director sought to find a more ‘authentic’ Shakespeare by replicating Elizabethan playing practices. This photograph of Poel’s 1893 Measure for Measure shows the replica Elizabethan stage space (known as the ‘Fortune fit-up’) commissioned by the director during its first use.
