Shakespeare Connected - Imagining New Place

5. Pilgrimage and Plate

This saucer would have been sold as a souvenir, possibly to visitors of New Place during the 1800s. It shows a drawing of the 1702 New Place with the text 'NEW PLACE STRATFORD UPON AVON RESIDENCE OF SHAKESPEARE'. This saucer was produced during a time when more and more people flocked to Shakespeare's hometown to see where the writer lived. Confusingly for both visitors and buyers, this image of New Place is not of the house Shakespeare occupied.
