Shakespeare Connected - Our German Shakespeare!

1897-1914 – Firm Friendship?

Perhaps the acorns of the wreath symbolised the growth of friendship between the two nations, as well as Shakespeare’s work, as the exchange of wreaths and invitations between the Shakespeare Birthplace and the German Shakespeare and Goethe societies continued annually.

These are a selection of the printed notices that accompanied the annual wreaths sent to the Free German Hochstift “In Memory of Goethe”, from 1897- 1901.

This is a minute book entry transcript of a response to an invitation from the Deutsche Shakespeare-Gesellschaft in 1914, for the fiftieth birthday celebration of the society’s existence, at which SBT trustee Mr Cust was to attend as representative of the Shakespeare Birthplace.
