Shakespeare Connected - Shakespeare Among Readers

5. The Stratford Grammar School Desk - Medieval/Tudor

An oak/elm standing schoolmaster’s desk from King Edward Sixth Grammar School. The book placed on the top of the desk for this photograph reminds us of the importance of the works of particular authors in the education of schoolboys. The kind of education they received was considerably extensive. After learning how to read and write, pupils would be progressively introduced to classic writers, such as Ovid and Plutarch. They would also have good knowledge of the Bible and of history. Those books would have a profound and everlasting influence in Shakespeare’s drama and poetry.
