A clipped half of a short cross penny dating to 1180-1247. As no other smaller round coinage was produced until 1279, the penny could be cut into halves and quarters to make halfpennies and farthings. This example would have been owned and traded by the occupants of the 13^th-century building that was destroyed to make way for the construction of New Place.
