Still my beating mind

Nia's Poem, Highly Commended, 4-7 years

HIGHLY COMMENDED, 4-7 years

Who created it?

Nia, age 5

Biography

“My name is Nia and I am five years-old. I like reading, dancing, cooking and looking after my baby brother. I enjoy spending time in the garden making mud food and potions from the plants.”

My creative response

Nia's Poem

To calm down I do a wiggle,

Then I colour with pencils from Smiggle,

I share a hug with my mum and dad.

It stops me from feeling so bad.

Walk and play in the park until it gets really dark.

About my creative response

Nia wrote the words and designed the picture and her big sister scribed the words onto the page for her.

"I chose a poem and a picture to represent how I feel. I love walking about because it helps calm me down and I get fresh air and exercise at the same time. I walk to school because it prepares me for the day.”

How has physical activity helped you when you felt anxious or upset?

"Physical Activity has helped me clear my mind, I walk to school and I feel calm before I start the day. When I am anxious or upset my feet take me wherever I want to go and I just follow my feet. I typically listen to music and dance to my favourite songs."

What do you do to ‘still your beating mind’?

“If I have a problem and I run around the problem will fade away. I play with my friends; they help me smile and stay calm.”

What is your favourite Shakespeare play, quote or character?

"I like A Midsummer’s Night’s Dream because of Puck who is a funny fairy who plays tricks on the characters."
