Ludo’s Model, Highly Commended, Key Stage Two Schools

Highly Commended in the Key Stage Two school entry

Who created it?

Ludo, age 11

“My name is Ludo and I’m eleven years-old and as you may see from my project I’m really passionate about growing things. I started growing vegetables in lockdown and I made a complete veg’ patch. I really love growing things because it’s really satisfying to watch when they germinate and fruit.  My other passions are physics and bird watching.”

About my creative response

“I thought long and hard about what I really love and decided I wanted to do something I’d have great fun creating, but also represented what I love in life. I love making things, mostly out of cardboard and a glue gun but I also love growing things. This project took me about three afternoons to make and I loved both the making and was proud of the finished product. But it also represents growing things that I love. It’s amazing that seeds, with a little water, earth and light can turn into plants and fruits. Growing things teaches you to learn from your mistakes – I love growing tropical plants and often they die but I use those failures as opportunities to learn.”

When have you been ‘true to yourself’?

“When I was about eight or nine, I started being really interested in physics. For my birthday my aunt said I could choose any present I wanted and suggested we go to the Lego shop. I love Lego, but what I really wanted was a physics dictionary, so she bought me one. I have read it like a book, which people say is not how you use a dictionary, but to me it’s a really interesting thing to do. My favourite chapter, is Q because one of my biggest passions in physics is Quantum Physics, the study of the smallest subatomic particles that make up the world.”

What is your favourite Shakespeare play?

“I really like Hamlet because it’s a story about standing up for what you think is right and not always taking the easiest option.”
