To thine own self be true...

Wasif’s Poem, Highly Commended, Key Stage Two Schools

Highly Commended in the Key Stage Two school entry

Who created it?

Wasif, age 9

Biography

“I am Wasif and I am nine and a half years-old. My favourite thing to do is arts and crafts.”

My creative response

A recipe to make me

To make me you will need the following feelings:

Happy, like mice eating bunches of cheese,

Frogs sticking their tongues out, reaching for bees,

Coming out of jail after weeks and weeks,

This is the first one you will need.

Excited, like a party popper going pop, pop, pop,

Eating a piece of cake with a cherry on top

Baking a cake with the heat at top,

This is for my joyful hop!

Angry, like a volcano erupting lots of lava,

Not beating the ender dragon in Minecraft java,

With a hammer in my chest and lava in my veins,

This is for all the pain.

Sad, like a passage-way leading to a dead end,

Making a letter you can’t send,

Something that you need that nobody will lend,

This is the last one for my sad sends.

About my creative response

“I responded to the quote like this because I think feelings about yourself are really important. I was thinking that recognising these feelings and being truthful about them is a good way to be true ‘to thine own self’.”

When have you been ‘true to yourself’?

“Once I was experimenting with different food but I wasn’t sure about it. I believed in myself and in the end I took a taste…it was good!”

What is your favourite Shakespeare play?

“My favourite play is Romeo and Juliet.”
