Admin History

James M. Gabler donated these photocopies in 1992. They had been made by or on Gabler's behalf, as part of his research into Thomas Jefferson's travels. Gabler's interests included wine and hospitality and these copies reflect this focus. From 1995 onwards, Gabler published a number of books on Thomas Jefferson.

John Adams and Thomas Jefferson both campaigned for American independence from Britain. Adams was the first American Minister Plenipotentiary (diplomat) to Britain, serving from 1785 to 1788. Jefferson was the second American Minister Plenipotentiary to France, serving from 1785 to 1789. In 1786 Jefferson visited Adams in England on official business. During this period, they journeyed to the midlands.

John Adams and Thomas Jefferson later became Presidents of the U.S.A. Adams was second President (1797 - 1801) and Jefferson was third President (1801 - 1809).
