Philips, George
George Philips (1766-1847), was the eldest son of the successful Manchester cotton manufacturer, Thomas Philips, of Sedgeley, which estate George inherited in 1811. In 1812 he entered Parliament, sitting as a Whig for various constituencies until 1834. George Philips purchased Weston House and estate for £75,000 in 1819 and was created a baronet in 1828. His son, George Richard Philips, the 2nd baronet, sat in parliament from 1818-1852.
