CharlesThomas Warde and Anne Hooper

Description

Correspondence between the trustees of the estate of C.T Warde and Mrs Anne Marie Cobden Hooper regarding an allowance promised to her by C.T Warde. The letters state that Mrs Hooper had seven children by C.T Warde. Mrs Hooper lived for many years in Stratford before leaving Mr Warde. Most of her children were removed from her and the trustees refused to let her contact them again. The letters written by her tell of the extreme poverty she suffers in London, having to sell her clothes for food and eventually being admitted into the poor house. She claimed that the house in Stratford called Rhinehill was built for her and that she was due an allowance of £400 per year. The trustees ocasionally give her 25/- per week but the allowance was stopped in 1870 due to her breaching the conditions of the allowance. Some letters from acquaintances tell of her poverty and how her children suffer through smallpox and how that family cannot even afford a Doctor. There is also a letter regarding the severe health problems of Mrs Hooper.
