Indentures of Lease and Release, the Release dated the 20th October 1668, between Dame Elizabeth Hales, widow of Sir Stephen Hales late of Snitterfield, Knight of the Honourable Order of the Bath, deceased of one part and the Honourable Thomas Coventry of North Mymmes, Hertfordshire, esquire and Edmund Page, gentleman servant to the said Thomas Coventry of the other part, whereby the Manors of Snitterfield and Luscombe with appurtenances, also land called Bearley Grove containing 160 acres, also a parcel of land containing 3/4 of a yard land theretofore in the tenure of Alice Hancome, widow, also land called Grissells (10 acres) in the tenure of William Carr, also a tenement with gardens, orchard etc. in the occupation of Samuel Merrick, also land called Hillocks Meadow then in the occupation of Samuel Merrick and Jno. Bracey, also a messuage with appurtenances with 1/4 yard land belonging then in the tenure of John Merce, also a cottage in the common field in the occupation of George Pittaway, also messuages and appurtenances in the several tenures of William Knight, John pigeon, Hy. Corbett and William Pagett, also a messuage together with part of Hillocks Meadow in the occupation of Giles Merrick, also a messuage, garden, orchards and appurtenances in the tenure of Henry Sumner, also chief rents out of the Manors of Snitterfield and Luscombe amounting to £7-18-3, also a moiety of the tithes of corn and grain of Snitterfield, also all the other hereditaments comprised in DR38/40 were conveyed by Dame Elizabeth Hales to Thomas Coventry in consideration of £95000 paid by him to Dame Elizabeth at that time, and £5000 to be paid to her at a certain future time. Covenant by Dame Elizabeth that she would before the 1st March ensuing levy a fine unto Edmund Page and his heirs of the above recited property to the sole use of Thomas Coventry and his heirs for ever. Memorandum dated 6th February 1669 as to livery of seisin had and taken by John Lax of Coventry attorney for Elizabeth Hales in the presence of John Wagstaffe, Thos. Wagstaffe, Stephen Stanton, John Parish and others. Also acknowledgement by the tenants of Dame Elizabeth of their several attomments to Thomas Coventry in the presence of John Lax, General Scott and the mark of Samuell Merricke. The tenants being Mary Meades, John Hill, Henry Simonds, Robert Meries, Josia Bickerston, William Coirre, Giles Merick, Humphrey Wheatley, John Bracy, John Herbage, Widow Hankorne, Francis Browne, Widow Baylis, Elizabeth Corbett widow, John Elvins, John Pidgeon, Henry Corbett, John Mearsh, Thomas Meades and William Neades. Lease dated 19th October 1668 by Dame Elizabeth Hales to Thomas Coventry of the same property for a year. Signed: Eliz. Hales. Seal of red wax enclosed in paper no impression. Witnesses: Ri.
