Description

From Arthur Hodgson, Montpellier, Brisbane to Frank Hodgson. He complains of the mismatch between the arrival of mail from England and the outgoing mail which means that letters received cannot be answered immediately. There is scarcely any news that will interest him.He was returned without opposition for the Warrego. He has been Colonial Secretary for two months. They are going to leave for home on the 9 October. He is hoping that Frank can join them in Rome. They have heard from Edward from Valparaiso. He is due to be paid off in the middle of August and his Captain hopes to find him another ship. Emily is in Eton Vale. She is enjoying herself and rides a good deal. They have had plenty of rain and now have fat sheep and cattle. Eton Vale is now fenced in with iron. They will soon have only 12 men looking after 70,000 sheep, rather than 40. Charlotte is not very strong. Mama is going to Sydney for Lilly's confirmation. The Duke of Edinburgh is enjoying himself in Sydney before continuing his tour. He is very popular in Sydney. He hopes that Frank enjoyed his visit to Shottery and the Balls at Stratford. He does not like the new Governor who is a great leveller and seeks popularity at any cost. He had Edward Hallett there and took him to Eton Vale. He tells Frank to be careful of his time and expenditure during the long vacation. He has sent some seeds to Uncle Edward to be planted by a friend in Algeria. He asks hat Uncle Henry sends £5.5.0 to the Rev. Lille De Burgh, W. Drayton for a register of dear Arthur's death to be forwarded to him.
