Hodgson of Clopton House: Correspondence and diary notes

Description

From Eliza Hodgson, 22 Via Felice to Frank Hodgson As she has a quiet morning she will write to him. The theatricals are over. They found them rather as bore as they took Papa away from them so much. He has now gone walking with Mr Abercromby, Mr Davidson and Mr Bell and will not be back until tomorrow. She describes the theatricals. They had a supper afterwards for the actors who did not get home until 3 in the morning. 'All very well for batchelors but I do not think a healthy amusement for mind or body for married men'. There is a lot of sickness in Rome and many deaths, sometimes 2 and 3 in one family. The hotel keepers have given the sick and the dead very bad treatment. She tells of a scandal of three ladies ordered out of Rome by the Pope. Many are leaving Rome. She is glad that they are not roaming around the continent. She is glad to be going to stay in Venice and then in Florence for 2 or 3 days. They expect to be in England in the third week in May. Thanks to Mrs Curry they have secured the Clopton Cook. She hopes that Percy got over safely to Annie's and thinks that it will do him good. Emily's singing practice is perfect purgatory. They all dislike the Roman food. Rev. Shadwell is most unpopular and has an offensive manner. She speaks of Clopton and says that she does not wish to possess a grand house and hopes that they do not live expensively there.
