Harvard House is located on the High Street of Stratford-upon-Avon. It is a timber-framed building, with ornately carved external beams, which was built in 1596 by Thomas Rogers, a wealthy local merchant and alderman. His grandson, John Harvard, emigrated to America in 1637, but died soon afterwards. Notably, John Harvard left a bequest to a college of education in Cambridge, Massachusetts. This college, which was renamed Harvard College, was a predecessor to Harvard University Harvard House was purchased in 1909 by Edward Morris, a wealthy American, who has been encouraged to do so by the novelist, and Stratford resident, Marie Corelli. Following its restoration, it was gifted to Harvard University. It is administered by a board of trustees, the Harvard House Memorial Trust
