Administrative History The Gas Company was formed in 1834 as the Stratford-upon-Avon Gaslight and Coke Company and incorporated in 1857 with authority to make and supply gas in the borough and neighbouring parishes. Under the 1879 Borough Act the company was transferred to the public authority. The gasworks were first established in Chapel Lane but were moved in 1837 to the Birmingham Road.
