Correspondence - Gregory Family

Description

Letter dated at Wolvey from Thomas [Astley] to Master [Arthur] Gregorye complaining that at the last leet of Wolvey Arthur had fined him 10 pounds for non-appearance, even though he claimed that he owed no suit, and that Mr. Marrowe was proceeding against him to obtain this sum; and claiming that he would only be liable to suit of court if Arthur can prove that any of his ancestors were also liable, i.e. Giles Astley, knight, Lord Thomas Astley, and William Astley, knight, of the elder house and lords of his (Thomas') manor of Wolvey, and Giles Astley, George Astley, Thomas Astley and William Astley (the present William's grandfather) of the second house and also lords of his manor of Wolvey; and hoping that although Andrew Astley, his uncle, who lives in the town, attends the leet and although Andrew Astley, his uncle, who lives in the town, attends the leet and although his father served on the court of survey upon the `coming in' of Lady Richmond, this will not bind him to attend the said leet; and for Arthur's gratification he sends him `a french croune to drinke a gallone of wyne withall for youre frendly councell yeue gave mee touchinge the revivinge of my court barron'. Endorsed with rough notes by Arthur Gregory.
