Description

Exemplification of the following: i) a writ, dated 6 February, 32 Elizabeth [1589/90] from the crown to the sheriff of the city of Coventr', requesting that he hold an inquisition to ascertain of what lands in his bailiwick Arthur Gregorie of Coventr', gent., was seised on 20 October, 9 Elizabeth [1567]; on which day, in the presence of William Smallwood, then mayor of Coventr', and Thomas Gregorie, the clerk of the statute, he bound himself to Edmund Gregorie, gent., a certain John Gregorie, esq., and Jeremy Gregorie, gent., in 1000 pounds [see no. 1861]; and to assign the said lands to the said Edmund in satisfaction of the said sum of 1000 pounds which the said Arthur has not paid and for which he has since been arrested. ii) an inquisition, held at Coventr' on 12 March, 32 Elizabeth [1589/90] whereat it was stated that the said Arthur Gregorie on the day of the recognition of the debt was seised in demesne as of fee of the manor of Stivechale, and of the following property in Stivechale: a capital messuage, with garden, orchard and other lands there in the tenure of the said Arthur Gregorie; another messuage with diverse lands pertaining thereto in the tenure of William Brunt; another messuage and lands in the tenure of Henry Brunt; a messuage and lands in the tenure of John Niccolson; a messuage and lands in the tenure of Robert Benet; a messuage and lands in the tenure of Thomas Brunt; a messuage and lands in the tenure of Henry Walford; a messuage and lands in the tenure of Richard Edge; a messuage and lands in the tenure of ----- Killingley; a messuage and lands in the tenure of Alice Gregory, widow; a messuage and lands in the tenure of Thomas Underhill; a messuage and lands in the tenure of Roger Duddeley and William Lee; a messuage and lands in the tenure of Thomas Gurman; all lands in the tenure of John Godfrey, a cottage in the tenure of Edward Horwood, another cottage in the tenure of Thomas Hersall; a messuage in the tenure of Edward Westeldy; a cottage in the tenure of Robert Benet; a cottage in the tenure of Thomas Blackwell; a cottage in the tenure of Christopher Hurst; a cottage in the tenure of Benedict Godfrey; a water-mill called Heath mill with the lands pertaining thereto in the tenure of Thomas Oughton, and rents of assize and services from the lands of Christ's College, Cambridge, Henry Goodere, knight, Robert Turnor, gent., Thomas Hill and Baldwin Hill; also of the following property in Coventr': a capital messuage next the Broad Gate (latam portam); three crofts of land and pasture called Duncroftes and Dunruydinges in Asthull in the tenure of Edward Gest and rents of assize from lards and tenements of the mayor and bailiffs of Coventr', Alice Dudeley, widow, Richard Barker, John Fenton and Henry Heath; all which lands and services, etc. were worth annually more than 20 pounds; with a note that the sheriff has assigned the said property to Edmund Gregory iii) a writ, dated 6 February, 32 Elizabeth, to the sheriff of the county of Warwick, with the same instructions as in i. iv) inquisition held at Warwick on 11 March, 32 Elizabeth, whereat it was stated that the said Arthur Gregory was seised in demesne as of fee of the manor or grange of Helinhull in the parish of Stoneley, with diverse lands pertaining thereto and two groves or coppices called le Nethergrove and Daniell Grove, a pasture called Daniell Feild, a close called Stonycrofte and other closes called the Crange Peces, all in Helinhull; all which premises, together with the appurtenances in Finham, were in the tenure of Arthur Gregory; also of the grange or vill of Kingeshull, a field there called le Woodfeild, another called le Brokefeild and another called Hullfeild in the tenure of Edward Marbery; also a messuage with three water-mills adjoining thereto called Rabcrofte Mills lying below Kingeshull in the parish of Stoneley, in the tenure of Simon Yate; also certain lands and woods in Stivechale in the tenure of the said Arthur Gregory, a croft in Canley in the tenure of Humphrey Smalewood, a messuage and lands in Corley in the tenure of Michael Barre, the site of the manor or castle of Brinkelowe with four acres of pasture and £3.16s. 0d. rent; also diverse rents issuing from lands in Meriden and Alspath; all which lands, etc. were worth annually more than 20 pounds; with a note that the sheriff has assigned the said property to Edmund Gregory.
