Stoneleigh rectory and tithes

Description

Answer of John Downes, gent. to the complaint in Chancery of Thomas, Lord Leigh. Downes, as guardian and step-father of Love God [sic] Gregory, occupies Helenhull Grange, formerly part of the possessions of the Abbey of Stoneleigh and purchased by the Gregory family of the Crown. As part of the Abbey demesnes it is exempt from the payment of tithes to the rectory of Stoneleigh. Leigh's complaint is in respect of coppice wood in Helenhull Hill Grove alias Gregory Grove in Finham cut down by Downes in 1667-8.
