'A Child of the Raj, or Grandma's Life' by Carmen Pickering

Description

Please note: This item contains an archaic, offensive term for Chinese people. It also describes racial segregation.

Typescript by Carmen Pickering, nee Hawley (born 1925), entitled: 'a Child of the Raj, or Grandma's Life'.

Carmen describes her parents' lives in England prior to their emigration to Madras in 1923, her life in India as a child and her visits to England, when she stayed with her maternal grand-mother (Grandma Chowne) in London, or her paternal grand-mother, Jane Laurens, who lived in Jersey. Later she attended a boarding school at Hayling Island.

After Carmen's return from Jersey to Madras (DR1153/8), she relates further war-time experiences in Chennai (Madras), Mumbai (Bombay) and Delhi, before returning to England in 1947.
