Shakespeare's Merchant of Venice / Translated into Tamil by V. Vanoogpala Charryar.

[Venice Viapari]

V Venugoopala Charryar translated the Merchant of Venice into Tamil in 1874 with the title Venice Viapari. On the front cover, the author is referred to as "V. Vanoogapala Charryar, B.A., of the Madras University". At the time he stated that one of the aims of this endeavour was to "help the Hindu Pandit in seeing the great difference between the verisimilitude of the English drama as represented by Shakespeare and the unreality of Hindu drama as a whole." Inside the front of this copy there is a hand written note referring to a different version of Merchant of Venice which can be found at "1880 / Hindi / Merchant of Venice". Gift of the Home Department, Government of India to Her Majesty's (Queen Victoria) Secretary for the State of India (Sir R.R Cross [Viscount Cross from 19 August 1886]), and thence by the India Office, London. Since 1964 the Library has been held on deport at the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust. Original list entry: Madras 1. Merchant in Venice in Tmail by V. Venugopala Chariyar.
