Shakespeare's Merchant of Venice / Translated into Urdu by N. Futehally.

English title on verso of title in Urdu. Gift of the Home Department, Government of India to Her Majesty's (Queen Victoria) Secretary for the State of India (Sir R.R Cross [Viscount Cross from 19 August 1886]), and thence by the India Office, London. Since 1964 the Library has been held on deposit at the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust. Naryar Mahomed Futehally translated this version of The Merchant of Venice into Urdu in 1884. The title page is printed in both English and Urdu, and reads: Shakespeare's Merchant of Venice Translated into Urdu by N. Futehally. Most respectfully dedicated by permission to His Excellency the Right Honourable Sir James Fergusson Bart K.C.M.G.C.I.E Governor of Bombay. All rights reserved 1884." It is also signed by the author on the inside front cover "Presented to the Shakespearean Society by the Translator N. Futehally 25.8.88."
The first Urdu translation of Shakespeare was the Merchant of Venice in 1884 under the title Tajir-i-Venice. It is likely that this is a copy of this early translation.
