Custodial history: "This decorative edition of The taming of the shrew, which was procured by the British Consulate in St. Petersburg, is from a Russian language collection of the works of William Shakespeare. It was presented, as a diplomatic courtesy, to Mr. Rem Ivanovich Vyakhirev, Chairman of the Gazprom Corporation in The Russian Federation, for his reference during a performance (in English) of The taming of the shrew at the Royal Shakespeare Theatre, Stratford-upon-Avon, on the evening of Wednesday 25th October 1995. This being occasioned by Mr. Vyakhirev's official visit to the United Kingdom, as a VIP guest of Her Majesty's Government, and his specific request to see Shakespeare being performed at the Royal Shakespeare Theatre. Mrs. Lubov F. Vyakhireva was also in attendance at this event. A copy of the official visit programme, bearing the arms of the United Kingdom Board of Trade, accompanies the item."
