Description

A mid-17th century oak desk box; with shaped butterfly hinges above a sloped two-plank lid with applied bottom moulding; the front and sides carved and painted with guilloche (interlaced bands enclosing circles) and rosette decoration and with applied base-mouldings to the front and sides; now mounted on an early 18th century side table base; the frieze later, raised on baluster turned legs and plain stretchers; English, c.1640, the base c.1710; later lock plate; spandrels of base now missing; paint very worn., Previously described as 'A desk box of carved oak, formerly in the ancient College at Stratford'.
