Raeren pot

Description

A stoneware pot; blue-grey; ovoid-shaped, the top band divided into triangular sections with alternate rouletting and carved decoration. Dated 1590. Of the type termed 'gres de Flandres' (stoneware thought at one time to have been made in Flanders)., 1910 Catalogue - 'Blue-grey stoneware cup, without handle, 8inches high, 5inches diameter; in front 'IE TENOR ICH HEB EMPOR'; about 1600.'

    inscription : : central band : : IE TENOR ICH HEB EMPOR [ 'I.E'. is probably Jan Emens (maker of Gres de Flandres) ICH HEB EMPOR means 'I lift up'. TENOR possibly referring to voice (?). The N of TENOR is written back to front],
