Shakespeare Club cider mug

Description

A salt-glaze cider mug; decorated with Shakespearean characters; This mug commemorates the Shakespeare Club of Stratford-upon-Avon, which was founded as the Shakespearian Club on April 23rd 1824. The club was under Royal patronage from 1830 until its re-founding in 1874 and as the Royal Shakespearean Club, initiated the annual celebrations of Shakespeare's birthday which continue to this day. It also campaigned for the purchase of Shakespeare's Birthplace for the nation.
