Two Sheldon tapestry panels

Description

Tapestry panels (2), c.1590-1610. Two narrow rectangular tapestry panels, possibly surviving fragments of cushion covers, and now in unglazed frame. They may have been woven in the Sheldon Tapestry Workshops in Barcheston, south Warwickshire. Panels are woven in coloured wool with silk highlights, the principal colours being green, yellow, blue, red, brown. Design features male figures hunting in a landscape with dogs, and chasing a variety of animals. The landscape includes trees, lakes, flowers and mansions. (The pattern is paralleled in the cushion of Faith, Hope and Charity in the Burrell Collection (47/19), where each scene meets at a tree by a pond at the centre of the border. Once thought to be possibly part of a valence but the depth is not sufficient.)
