Mother and Child

Description

An early seventeenth-century portrait; oil on oak panel; woman seated with her son, about one year old, both wearing elaborate lace. Research in 2010 argued the artist was Jan Daemen Cool. Previously attributed variously to Nicolaes Eliasz Pickenoy and Cornelis de Vos.

The mother was previously cited as being Amelee von Solwes, the Princess of Orange, but the identification is now deemed unlikely as there is nothing to indicate that the subjects are of royal birth. The opulent clothing is typical of other paintings of the Dutch commercial elite of the period. The painting was conserved in 1996 with the assistance of the Woodmansterne Art Conservation Awards.
