Tapestry panel

Description

Tapestry panel, c. 1570-1590. Tapestry panel, framed and glazed, and possibly woven in the Sheldon Tapestry Workshop at Barcheston, in south Warwickshire. The panel is woven in wool with silk highlights, the principal colours being blue, red and green. It illustrates the biblical Story of Joseph, with depictions of Joseph sold into captivity, Joseph and Potiphar's wife, and Joseph before Pharaoh. The border depicts fruit and flowers, with lower corners with fountains. (This theme seems to be unique in the Sheldon repertoire). The panel appears to be mounted onto a blue fabric covered board.
