Sealskin coffer

Description

A mid 17th-century small coffer; the domed lid formed of pine boards covered with sealskin (?) and decorated with patterns of stamped brass nailheads and leather strips forming the initials and date EN 1661, and with brass carrying handle; the lower rectangular portion similarly constructed, and with later lock plate and hasp; English, dated 1661. Lined with paper from a Stratford deed dated 1784.
