Luckenbooth brooch

Description

The so-called 'Shakespeare brooch' - a brooch discovered in 1827. On the reverse is scratched 'W. Shakespere'. At one point kept in a wood and glass case and thought to be of 16th-century date.

The luckenbooth design originated in Scotland in the 17th century and often shows a crown above a heart, as here. They were given as love tokens, often at betrothals or weddings.
