Nicholas Rowe

Description

A pencil drawing of Nicholas Rowe (1674-1718), playwright, poet and editor of a six-volume edition of Shakespeare's plays published in 1709. A handwritten note on the reverse of the picture identifies the subject as Nicholas Rowe and attributes the picture to William Faithorne the Elder (c. 1620-91). However, this attribution is incorrect; the dates of artist and sitter mean that Rowe would need to have been no older than 17 at the time the drawing was made and the subject is clearly an older man.
