Charcoal drawing showing the mulberry tree that was planted by Dame Peggy Ashcroft in 1969 in the Great Garden at New Place. The charcoal used by the artist includes some that came from excavations themselves.

This is one of 8 works by the artist that document the archaeological excavations on the site of New Place, 2010-2013. Spaak was a guide at Nash's House and New Place during the excavations and undertook the work as a response to the activity on the site. Spaak studied at the Royal College of Art in the 1960s under Peter Blake, Carel Weight and Roger de Gray. He is a professional artist and retired art teacher.
