A scene from Shakespeare's Macbeth

Description

An early 19th century oil painting on panel, depicting a scene from Shakespeare's Macbeth, inscribed 'Thomas Stothard' to the reverse. Lady Macbeth admonishes her husband Macbeth when he returns from the murder of Duncan, King of Scotland, still carrying the bloody daggers used to commit the crime. Seizing the weapons to return them to Duncan's chamber, she exclaims: 'Infirm of purpose! Give me the daggers" (Act II, Scene 2). The painting was possibly a study either for a larger work or for an illustrated edition of the play.

Bequeathed by Richard Jeffree through Art Fund.
