Playscale model of the Bidford Chair
Description
A playscale model of the 'Falcon Inn' or 'Bidford' chair (STRST : SBT 1865-5) made from oak taken from Holy Trinity Church, Stratford-upon-Avon, during restoration work in 1886. Carved, turned and joined, the seat is removable.
A paper label on the reverse of the chair back states that it was authenticated by William Pearce of 6 & 7 Bridge Street, Stratford-upon-Avon. Pearce, a jeweller and china dealer, operated out of this location from at least 1881 up until at least 1901. He seems to have also dealt in Shakespeare-related souvenirs. The label reads 'Made from Oak which came / out of Stratford-upon-Avon / Church during its Restora- / tion in 1886, and guaranteed / genuine. Signed, / William Pearce / 6 & 7, Bridge Street, Straford-upon-Avon.'
A paper label on the underside of the seat reads "MODEL OF SHAKESPEARE'S / CHAIR, / As in the Museum at Shakespeare's / Birthplace, formerly at the Old / Falcon Inn, Bidford. / Made from Old Oak.'
